Description:
Chesti, a 17th-century composer, studied under Calissi in Rome and enjoyed great success as an opera composer in Florence. After serving as court Kapellmeister in Innsbruck, he was appointed vice-Kapellmeister of the Vienna court in 1666, where he spent the rest of his life. This opera, *La Dori, or The Noble Slave*, is set in Babylon along the Euphrates River. Princess Dori of Nicaea was betrothed to the Persian Prince Oronte when she was a child, but was later abducted by pirates and taken to Egypt, where she was raised as an Egyptian princess. Dori and Oronte are reunited in Egypt as adults, but Oronte is summoned back to Persia when his father, the king, falls critically ill. Dori, who has crossed over to Persia disguised as a man in pursuit of Oronte, is captured by bandits and sold into slavery. Interwoven with comical episodes stemming from the twists and turns of fate, the story culminates in the reunion of Dori and Oronte. After premiering in 1657 at the court in Innsbruck, where Chesti was employed, this opera was performed in Italy to celebrate a wedding in the Medici family and went on to enjoy great popularity in various locations. This video is a recording of a 2019 performance in Innsbruck—a city closely associated with the composer—commemorating the 350th anniversary of Chesti’s death. From the light-footed singing of the soloists, who display exceptional technical skill, to the ensemble of the Accademia Bizantina and D’Antone—both renowned for their interpretations of 17th-century works—this performance brings a masterpiece, which had faded into the background over time, vividly back to life in the present day.
