Her students and the musicians with whom she shared close friendships and mutual influence—regardless of nationality—affectionately called her “Mademoiselle.” In addition to Stravinsky, with whom she shared a deep bond of respect, her students included Piazzolla—who knocked on her door after feeling limited by the insular world of tango—Carter, who would later express his individuality through the twelve-tone technique; Glass, who established a lyrical style after exploring minimalism; Legrand, a peerless melody maker active in jazz and film music; and Quincy Jones—a master of melody who left a significant mark not only on jazz but on popular music as a whole—she is known for teaching the fundamentals of music to this diverse array of artists and sowing the seeds of their artistic growth. You can enjoy these works in a harmonious performance by Astrig Shiranoshian and Nathaniel Gouan—who have also performed together at La Folle Journée au Japon—a performance brimming with musicality that perfectly captures the essence of these diverse pieces. The concluding sequence of Glass, Legrand, and Jones is particularly fascinating, as it clearly conveys the influence of Nadia Boulanger, which continues to this day. Nadia Boulanger’s own “Three Pieces” were written three years before she, too, ceased composing following the death of her younger sister Lily—who was six years her junior and held her talent as a composer in high regard. The pianist here is the master Daniel Barenboim, who was himself a student of Nadia Boulanger. With the clear tone of his unique parallel-string piano—developed in collaboration with Chris Marne, who is also known for his collection and restoration of fortepianos—and his gentle, delicate touch, he supports Shiranosian’s cello playing, adding a beautiful finishing touch to the exquisite works left behind by his mentor. Although Astrig Shiranosian has appeared on the Mendelssohn album (ALPHA410) by her sister, Shushan Shiranosian, this is her first solo release on the ALPHA label. Naxos Japan
