[Paavo & the Tonhalle: Tchaikovsky Symphony Cycle Begins with Symphony No. 5!] Paavo Järvi was appointed music director of the Tonhalle Orchestra in 2019. Recording of the complete Tchaikovsky symphonies—a first for both him and the Swiss orchestra—is set to begin. Symphony No. 5 has been chosen as the first release. Given its brilliant composition and popularity, it’s an impeccable choice; in fact, it is also the Tchaikovsky symphony that was first performed in Zurich in 1895, and given the historical context—that since the “Pathetique” was performed the following year and “Francesca da Rimini” in 1901, Tchaikovsky’s orchestral works have been a key part of the Tonhalle Orchestra’s repertoire—this choice holds special significance. In this Symphony No. 5, the blend of Paavo’s characteristic lightness and the Tonhalle Orchestra’s powerful sound creates a pleasant contrast and forward momentum. While a sense of lyricism is evident down to the finest details, the performance stands apart from interpretations of Tchaikovsky that rely solely on sheer force. The sense of balance at the beginning of the finale—where each note is sung with depth without losing its nobility—is exceptional, as is the main section, which delivers an overwhelming climax while maintaining a clear tempo. The coupling piece, “Francesca da Rimini,” is relatively long among Tchaikovsky’s purely orchestral works (excluding his symphonies) and is generally considered somewhat challenging; Pavo organizes the storm-like musical ideas with clarity while letting them roar with ferocity; he has the orchestra sing the romantic melodies with vigor, and by maintaining a brisk tempo throughout, he brings out the work’s full charm. This is a wonderful album that exceeds expectations, and I am very much looking forward to future releases in this series. Naxos Japan
