[A Young Trio’s Passionate Performance of Schubert’s Late Masterpieces] The Busch Trio was formed in London in 2012. The ensemble is named after the legendary violinist Adolf Busch because one of its members, Mathieu, plays a Guadagnini violin that once belonged to him. Having completed a complete collection of Dvořák’s chamber music works—including his piano pieces—on the ALPHA label, the trio now turns its attention to Schubert. The Second Sonata, written a year before his death, is a masterpiece with a slightly different character than the relatively gentle First Sonata—composed around the same time—though both are characterized by an overflowing sense of song. The Second Sonata, however, stands out for its dynamic brushstrokes and evokes a sense of desolation that offers a glimpse into the darkness. The gentle and beautiful “Nocturne” is also a late work. That said, Schubert was still only around 30 years old at the time—roughly the same age as the three musicians performing it here. You can enjoy a beautiful yet passionate performance that conveys a deep empathy for this young composer, who pushed himself to the limits despite his frail health, squeezing every last drop of his talent from his body until his death. The “Sonata Movement” was composed when the composer was just 15 years old; it conveys not only precociousness but also a sense of innocence, serving as a refreshing interlude amidst the profound depth of the entire album. The Busch Trio uses a version of the Finale of No. 2 that restores the 98 measures cut from the original publication; however, they omit the repeat of the exposition. Egon Schiele, a painter who died at the age of 28 in Vienna nearly a century after Schubert, shares significant similarities with the composer: a deep anguish over falling ill at a young age, a sense of existential regret, and the intense individuality and talent required to express these feelings—these are among the central themes of this album. The cover features Schiele’s “Sunset (Versinkende Sonne).” Since the second movement of Schubert’s Piano Trio No. 2 is also based on the Swedish folk song “The Sun Is Setting (Se Solen Sjunker),” this painting was chosen for the cover.
