[Kremer joins the Alpha roster: a tribute to Beethoven made with Mario Brunello] An imaginatively conceived album marking the 250th anniversary of Beethoven's birth. Two great players, Gidon Kremer and Mario Brunello, join forces with Kremerata Baltica to record two of the celebrated late string quartets in versions for string orchestra. Two recent works inspired by Beethoven complete the programme, exploring what the composer's legacy means to us today. At the heart of the disc are the two quartets. No. 16, Beethoven's last completed work, is conducted by Brunello, while No. 14 is directed by Kremer from the violin. Kremer seems to have had Bernstein's Vienna Philharmonic recordings in mind for both, but the results are quite different from that richly upholstered manner: the singing quality and vivid phrasing so characteristic of Kremerata Baltica, together with a clear, transparent sound, give us a distinctly contemporary view of Beethoven. The album opens with a piece by Léo Ferré, the Monaco-born singer-songwriter who made his career in France. A man of radical convictions, Ferré felt a deep affinity with Beethoven; he set words to the Egmont Overture, and film survives of him conducting the Coriolan Overture. This piece takes as its motto the words Beethoven wrote in the autograph of the String Quartet No. 16 - "Muss es sein? Es muss sein!" The text, delivered in a rapid-fire Italian, runs along the lines of "Where was music? Not in some special place - it belongs with the people. Beethoven is in the street!" Here Ferré's voice is superimposed on an arrangement by the Italian composer Sivilotti. Sollima's "Note sconte" - "hidden notes" in the Venetian dialect - is dedicated to Franco Rossi, the Venetian-born cellist of the Quartetto Italiano and Brunello's teacher, and takes its title from what Rossi often told his students: "Pay attention to the notes hidden within the score." Built on treasure-like phrases that Sollima discovered in the Biamonti catalogue of Beethoven's works, published in Turin in 1968, the piece was written for cello ensemble and is heard here in an arrangement for string orchestra.
