[Two Key Works Essential to Understanding Bruckner: Hellewaeg’s New Recording Showcasing the Characteristics of Period Instruments] While Bruckner is known for his grand and profound symphonies, he originally began his musical training as a church organist and was also active as a choral conductor for many years. His church music serves as a crucial key to understanding his compositional style, and two particularly significant works from this repertoire are now available in a new recording by Philip Herreweghe, a period-instrument conductor who has also garnered attention for his choral conducting. Mass No. 2 is somewhat unique among his three major masses, featuring a wind ensemble that supports the choir. Composed with outdoor performances in mind, Herreweghe recorded this piece 30 years ago with Ensemble Musique Oblique as the instrumental ensemble, but this is his first recording with an ensemble specializing in period instruments. The sound design, which takes into account the interplay with the organ—which produces sound through the same mechanism as wind instruments—is sure to draw you into the musical development. On the other hand, a period-instrument recording of the “Te Deum” is extremely rare. Composed immediately after Symphony No. 7, this work is of such importance that the composer himself—referring to his unfinished Symphony No. 9—stated, “If the final movement remains unfinished, use that ‘Te Deum’ instead.” To hear this monumental work—brief in duration yet rich in content—under the exceptionally compelling baton of Helleweh, with an interpretation that captures the 19th-century sound the composer would have known, is truly a rare Bruckner experience.
