Description:
[“Young Instruments”: Uncovering the Truth of the Renaissance Through an Unexpected Combination of Harpsichord and Plucked Strings!] The European early music scene of the 21st century is undergoing a generational shift. Maurizio Croci, who has released numerous well-crafted Baroque recordings on Italian early music labels such as Tactus and Stradivarius, Evangelina Mascardi—who has demonstrated her masterful command of plucked instruments in ensembles such as his own “Pegaso” and “Accordone,” led by Marco Bisli—are both artists whose new releases are unmissable for discerning early music listeners. This latest recording, in which the two artists engage with Renaissance music without compromise, delivers exactly what one would expect—it conveys, without the need for explanation, just how surprisingly rich in possibilities the collaboration between plucked strings and the keyboard was even in Renaissance music. The setting is the 16th century. The great power of Spain extended its hegemony to the Italian Peninsula, where numerous warring factions vied for power, bringing Milan under its sphere of influence. The theme of this album is the recreation of a concert held in the court of a Spanish nobleman, said to have featured a wondrous dialogue between plucked and keyboard instruments. The album features a dialogue between the vihuela—a plucked string instrument beloved in Spain—and the harpsichord, which was establishing its own unique style while drawing inspiration from the playing techniques of plucked string instruments. Distinguishing between duets and solo pieces depending on the composition, the album takes listeners into the world of various hidden Spanish gems that were also heard on the Italian Peninsula… The appeal lies in the two performers’ exquisite musicality and the natural sound engineering, which strikes a wonderful balance between direct sound and ambient atmosphere. Alongside the exquisite sound of the vihuela, the timbres of the wooden pipe organ and the 16th-century model harpsichord are equally captivating. Naxos Japan
