Description:

[Antonini, who is working on a complete recording of symphonies, finally presents Haydn’s late masterpiece!] In Italy—a country that was once a step behind in adapting to period instrument performance—Il Giardino Armonico emerged as an ensemble that presented authentic Vivaldi with its own unique flair and character, instantly establishing the fact that “Italy has a period music scene.” Its music director, Giovanni Antonini, has in recent years increasingly focused on the Classical repertoire and is currently working on a meticulous complete recording series of Haydn’s symphonies (HAYDN2032) for the Alpha label—a project made possible by his extensive experience in Baroque performance. In the midst of this, a complete recording of Haydn’s late masterpiece, *The Creation*, has suddenly appeared as a sort of special edition within the series. Given Antonini’s unique ability to bring out Haydn’s astonishing wit and the ingenuity of his unconventional use of sound, this release is not to be missed. *The Creation* is a monumental oratorio that Haydn premiered in Vienna in 1798, after returning from a trip to London and having composed all of his more than 100 symphonies. Along with the subsequent *The Seasons*, it was crafted with a rich sonic texture informed by Haydn’s experiences in England—where Handel’s works enjoyed enduring popularity—and fully showcases the charm of the orchestral techniques he honed through his symphonies, making for a truly breathtaking listening experience. Antonini pays close attention to every detail of the work; rather than simply aiming for impact through sharp, edgy sound, he carefully brings out the work’s beauty through well-considered tempo choices and agogic phrasing. The basso continuo is played on the harpsichord rather than the fortepiano. The performances by the three soloists—all renowned for their interpretations of sacred music—are truly masterful, resulting in an interpretation that reveals deeper layers of richness the more you listen. Alongside the symphony recording series, this new recording offers a fresh perspective that reaffirms Haydn’s true value. Naxos Japan
