Description:
Following the first volume (ARIADNE5005), which was highly acclaimed for its recordings of historic performances, here is the second volume of “Elgar from America.” This release features rare recordings from the early 1940s of legendary “Elgarian” interpreters—including Sergeant, Toscanini, and Menuhin—performing with the NBC Symphony Orchestra. Remastered by Rani Spahr, an engineer with a long list of awards for audio restoration, this release vividly brings the performances of that era back to life. He also authored the liner notes (in English only) for this release, offering insight into the context of the recordings. Menuhin, who had maintained a long-standing relationship with the composer since recording Elgar’s Violin Concerto in 1932, performs this 1945 version, which is a shorter version that was edited for radio broadcast at the time. Sargent’s performance of “Cocaine” is also a highlight. The Toscanini recording features the “Prelude and Allegro” from a 1940 performance with string virtuosos Mishakov, Cooley, and Miller.
