Description:
Emilie Meyer was born in 1812 to father Johann and mother Henrietta, who owned a pharmacy in Friedland, a town in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. She received an early musical education and played the piano, but due to her own health and family problems as a young girl, she did not become a composer until she was nearly 30 years old and studied with Karl Röwe. However, when she published her works in 1842, they were immediately well received and she came into the limelight as an outstanding female composer alongside Fanny Mendelssohn and Clara Schumann. The two symphonies on this album were premiered in 1847, but their composition dates back to an earlier period when she was studying composition with Lève. The first symphony, in particular, has a unique style with creative harmony within a classical framework, and is a powerful work that shows Meyer's unique personality that has escaped the influence of Lève.
