Reinbert De Leeuw
Description:
[Reinbert de Leeuw’s “Song of the Swans” from *The Song of the Earth* Makes Its Debut!] Pianist and conductor Reinbert de Leeuw passed away on February 14, 2020, at the age of 81. In the month before his death, he left behind a recording of *The Song of the Earth*, which he had arranged himself. In this version, arranged in 2010, the solo parts—alto (mezzo-soprano) and tenor—remain unchanged, while the large orchestra has been replaced by a 15-piece ensemble based on a woodwind quintet and string quartet, supplemented by low-register instruments, keyboard instruments, a harp, and percussion. True to De Leu’s reputation for actively engaging with and researching modern and contemporary music, this arrangement skillfully brings out the characteristics of each instrument. Compared to the famous Schoenberg and Rein version, the addition of more woodwinds and a harp has made the expression far richer, while streamlining the percussion has enhanced clarity and intimacy. The performance is by Het Collectief, who have previously collaborated with De Leeuw on recordings such as *Berg, Zemlinsky Song Cycles* (ZZT345). True to their reputation for excelling in the interpretation of modern and contemporary music, the musicians’ high level of individual initiative brings the piece to life. The singers also respond to this performance with their expansive, free-flowing vocals; it’s hard to believe that Richard, who recently delivered a magnificent performance in the Berlioz video release with Gardiner (CVS011/NYDX-50016), is simply exquisite, complemented by De Leeuw’s subtle nuances—it’s hard to believe he passed away just a few weeks after this recording was made.
