Description:
[Yonemelli’s Stunning “Requiem,” Performed by Pio and an Elite Ensemble!] One of the joys of early music is the eye-opening experience of discovering recordings of composers and works you’ve never heard of before. However, new recordings by “master composers of yesteryear”—who consistently promise a high standard of quality—are undoubtedly worth paying special attention to. This new recording, which shines a light on the “Requiem” by Yonmerri—a leading figure of the Neapolitan School who has seen a remarkable resurgence in recent years—is precisely the kind of release that fits into this tradition and captivates the listener from the very first note. Niccolò Jonmelli was the same age as C.P.E. Bach, the second son of Johann Sebastian Bach, and the innovative opera composer Gluck; alongside slightly older composers such as Porpora and Leo, as well as Pergolesi—who was close to his own age—he stands as a key representative of the Neapolitan School. This talented composer, who left Italy to enjoy a glorious career as court composer in Stuttgart, masterfully employed the pre-Classical “galant” style while producing a string of masterful operas characterized by a unique style that even incorporated ensemble accompaniment in recitatives; however, the work recorded here is a rare sacred composition. His “Requiem,” in which the tranquility befitting church music intertwines with the passion characteristic of the Neapolitan School, was highly praised even by his contemporaries, as evidenced by the numerous surviving manuscript scores. The Gisleri Ensemble—a group of talented Italian musicians who caused a sensation by reviving and recording Pergolesi’s long-lost Mass—delivers a superb interpretation of this work’s beauty, alongside a cast of soloists led by Sandrine Piau. With its comprehensive liner notes, this new recording leaves one in awe of Yonemelli’s talent, which extended far beyond the realm of opera. Naxos Japan
