Recorded during the Vienna State Opera’s 1977 tour. Enjoy Edita Gruberova’s radiant voice! Don Pasquale is a wealthy, elderly bachelor. He plans to leave his fortune to his nephew Ernesto, but when Ernesto rejects the marriage partner Don Pasquale has chosen for him—and appears to have a lover of his own— Thinking, “I might as well marry her myself” rather than let some mysterious woman strip him of his fortune, Don Pasquale asks his friend Malatesta to arrange a marriage—only to have him bring his own sister. At first glance, the young woman seemed meek and obedient, but the moment she signed the marriage contract, her attitude changed completely... This performance was recorded during the Vienna State Opera’s first national tour of Austria (Mürzzuschlag) in 1977. A young Gurbérova, appearing in the role of Norina, delivers a comical and coquettish performance alongside her magnificent singing. This performance dates from the period when Gurbélová gained worldwide fame for her 1976 production of *Ariadne auf Naxos* (as Zerbinetta, conducted by Karl Böhm; a live recording is available). The title role is played by the legendary singer Oscar Červenka, and the solid vocal performances of the supporting cast—including Maratesta (Hans Helm) and Ernesto (Luigi Alva)—greatly enliven this production. The video shows the cast and crew relaxing on a bus during the overture right after the performance begins, as well as the stage being set up at the venue. Once the opera starts, the singing—based on Joachim Popelka’s German adaptation of the original libretto—draws laughter from the audience. Naxos Japan
