It brings together masterpieces that were at the cutting edge of art at the time—dazzling music lovers who gathered in salons in search of new sounds—and which still radiate an undimmed charm today. The album features Berg’s Chamber Concerto in the composer’s own arrangement and Schoenberg’s Chamber Symphony in an arrangement by Webern. Both are superb arrangements that further reduce the original small ensemble size, thereby concentrating the essence of the works. Mahler’s art song, in which the beauty of the melody is accentuated by the flute, was arranged for Payu by contemporary composer Ronald Kornfeil. The album’s greatest appeal, without a doubt, lies in its stellar lineup of performers. Led by Le Sage, and featuring Daishin Kashimoto, Payu, Meye, and Presser—all renowned virtuosos who are active throughout Europe and familiar faces at music festivals around the world—they deliver magnificent music that seamlessly blends their individual, incisive expressions with a rich ensemble sound at the highest level.
