[A Baroque Opera by Christophe Rousset and Les Tarans Liriques!] Because Orfeo broke the taboo, Eurydice was once again seized by death, and to ease this sorrow, the gods held a banquet in honor of Orfeo’s birthday. Bacchus, the only one not invited, flew into a rage, and Orfeo was torn apart by his priestesses. Orfeo’s soul, having returned to the Underworld, longs to be reunited with Eurydice, but… The early Baroque Italian composer Landi is remembered, alongside Monteverdi and Rossi, as a pioneer of “opera.” This *The Death of Orfeo* is a musical drama whose fantastical plot stands out even when compared to Monteverdi’s *Orfeo*, which also draws on the same Greek myth. In this recording, Les Tarans Lyriques, led by Christophe Rousset, who masterfully supports the outstanding performances of the soloists and chorus with a clear and archaic sound, while the master director Pierre Audi—who served as artistic director of the Dutch National Opera for 30 years—breathes new life into this work with a unique staging that, as his final production, does not shy away from occasionally evoking a kitschy impression.
