Description:
A world-renowned English violinist, Scaves is also an accomplished researcher of historical instruments and is the only performer who has played the beloved violins of Viotti, Paganini, Joachim and Kreisler, and Ole Bull, among others. His extensive knowledge of historical instruments has led him to perform at museums in Washington, D.C., and to collaborations with the British Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. For this recording, he uses an instrument made in 1782 by German violin maker Martin Leopold Witthalm II, with a 1775 bow by François Tourt. The beautiful melodies of Schubert's three sonatas (sonatines) are played together by Julian Perkins, a specialist in old music who plays a rectangular "square piano" popularized in the 19th century.
