Yutaka Oguri, a composer born in Osaka. Oguri first discovered his passion for music while playing the French horn in a wind ensemble during his time at a commercial school. He went on to study the instrument in earnest in Tokyo and joined the Kansai Symphony Orchestra (later the Osaka Philharmonic Orchestra) in 1950. While active as a horn player, he continued to hone his skills as a composer. Encouraged by Takashi Asahina, with whom he had been friends since his time in Tokyo, he began to portray Osaka—a city proud of its unique culture—through music. This included the talkative and rich linguistic culture unique to Osaka, a city that flourished as a center of commerce, as well as performing arts such as Kamigata Rakugo and Shochiku Shinkigeki. And the lively summer festivals designed to help people endure Osaka’s sweltering summers… Oguri’s works, born from the interplay of these elements, possess such distinctiveness that one is tempted to call him the “Bartok of Osaka,” and they speak powerfully to the listener. Performed by the Osaka Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Tatsuya Shimono—a conductor who carries on the musical tradition directly from Ōguri and Asahina, having served as a conducting fellow with the Osaka Philharmonic under Takashi Asahina for two years starting in 1997. *The liner notes and performer profiles are reprinted from the booklet of the previously released product [8.555321J].
