Description:
Fumio Hayasaka composed music for films that have left their mark on the history of Japanese film music, such as *Seven Samurai* and *Rashomon*. Although he aspired to become a composer from his youth, he was forced to give up his plans to attend a music college due to family circumstances. However, he never abandoned his musical path, forming the “New Music Federation” with contemporaries such as Akira Ifukube and Atsushi Miura, and continuing to play the piano. After finally realizing his dream of becoming a composer, he advocated “Pan-Orientalism” and created a unique musical style that drew on Eastern sensibilities and sounds. His compositional style is also known for influencing many composers of the next generation, including Toshiro Mayuzumi and Toru Takemitsu. This album features Hayasaka’s representative works in the realm of pure music. The “Piano Concerto,” recorded here for the first time worldwide, features Hiromi Okada as soloist, who skillfully weaves out the meditative beauty inherent in the piece. Also included are “Dance of the Left and Dance of the Right,” inspired by Gagaku, and “Overture in D Major,” which won first prize in the competition for orchestral works commemorating the 2,600th anniversary of the Imperial Era.
