In 1935, the first prize at the Tchelepnin Competition—whose jury included renowned French composers such as Roussel and Ibert—was awarded to a 21-year-old unknown named Akira Ifukube. Living in Hokkaido, he had come into contact with the Ainu people and was deeply influenced by their way of life and culture. His debut work, “Japanese Rhapsody”—which fully reflected the vitality of the Ainu people—won first prize, and Akira Ifukube’s name quickly became known throughout the Japanese music world. Since then, Ifukube has continued to exert an immense influence on the Japanese music world as an outstanding teacher and as a master of film music, best exemplified by his work on the movie *Godzilla*. This album features “Sinfonia Tapkara,” inspired by “Tapkara,” a form of Ainu dance; “Ritmica Ostinata,” which focuses on repetition (ostinato) and seeks to fill the entire piece with repeated motifs; and “SF Symphonic Fantasy No. 1”—a medley of film music, primarily from the “Godzilla” series, arranged by Ifukube himself. You can enjoy these three pieces in a performance by the Russian Philharmonic Orchestra, led by Yablonsky, that is wildly exciting.
