Henze’s *The Prince of Homburg*, often regarded as a classic of modern opera, is a three-act work based on the original story by Heinrich von Kleist. It addresses the weighty theme—still relevant today—of the conflict between an individual’s decisions and the judgment of the law. Henze remarked, “While searching for words that could bring something new out of my music, I came across *The Prince of Humburg* by my friend von Kleist. Who else but he could have written such a libretto? The themes of the conflict between individual decisions and the raison d’être (the state’s raison d’être), issues of law and order, and human beings trembling before the immense power of the ruling authorities are all things that could happen today, and could just as easily have happened a thousand or two thousand years ago. “Much of my work over the past few years has led me, through this drama, to a new perspective—namely, a new form of polyphony that breaks free from convention,” he said. The performance features a cast of accomplished singers specializing in contemporary works, conducted by Cornelius Meister, who was born in 1980 and has served as Music Director of the Stuttgart State Opera since 2018. Meister served as principal guest conductor of the Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra from 2017 through March 2020, making him a familiar figure in Japan as well.
