Zemlinsky’s Opera *The Dwarf*, a Reflection of His Own Thoughts On Princess Donna Clara’s birthday, a “strange-looking little man” arrived from Turkey. Having never seen himself in a mirror, the dwarf was unaware of his true appearance and fell in love with the princess at first sight. Seeing how people laughed at his appearance, the man thought, “I can make everyone happy,” and finally confessed his love to the princess. The princess pretended to be attracted to him, but in the end, she showed him a mirror and confronted him with the cruel truth… In this video, Schoenberg’s “Accompaniment to a Scene from a Film” is adapted as the opera’s prologue, telling the story of a man and a woman sitting at a piano. The man is portrayed as Zemlinsky, while the other is likened to his “princess,” Alma Schindler (later Mrs. Mahler), creating a wonderfully effective prologue to the main opera. This video comes from the Berlin Deutsche Oper, which has been garnering attention for its innovative productions. It features Elena Tzaragova, with her expansive, beautiful voice, as Queen Clara; British tenor David Butt-Phillip, who captivates with his refined singing as the dwarf. Centered around these two, the production features a cast of accomplished singers, with the chorus and orchestra—led by Donald Lanikles, who performs at opera houses around the world—rendering Zemlinsky’s music in all its richness and detail. Furthermore, the production—directed by Tobias Kratscher, whose staging of *Tannhäuser* at the 2019 Bayreuth Festival also sparked controversy—features a unique concept in which the role of the dwarf is performed by two actors and singers sharing a single part, and the simple, white-themed set, combined with the music, will vividly bring this bizarre and cruel tale to life.
