Zemlinsky (1871-1942)
Description:
On the birthday of Donna Clara, the princess in Zemlinsky's opera "The Dwarf," a projection of his own feelings, a "strange-looking little man" arrives from Turkey. The little man, who has never seen a mirror, does not know what he really looks like, and falls in love with the princess at first sight. Seeing the way people laughed when they saw him, the man thought, "I can make everyone happy," and finally confessed his love to the princess. The princess pretends to be attracted to him, but finally shows him a mirror and confronts him with a cruel truth... In this video, Schoenberg's "Accompaniment Music for a Scene from a Film" is adapted as the prologue to the opera into a story of two men and a woman at the piano. The man is Zemlinsky, and the other is his princess, Alma Sintler (later Mrs. Mahler), and the film serves as a wonderful prologue to the opera. This film features two singers from the Deutsche Oper Berlin, which has been attracting attention for its innovative productions: Elena Tsaragova's beautiful voice for Queen Clara and David Butt Philip, a British tenor who sings beautifully as the Dwarf, as well as the chorus and orchestra led by Donald Runnicles, who are active in opera houses around the world. The chorus and orchestra, led by Donald Runnicles, who has sung in opera houses all over the world, will present Zemlinsky's music in all its richness. In addition, the unique design of the stage, in which an actor and a singer play the role of a dwarf, directed by Tobias Kratzer, who also directed the controversial "Tanhäuser" at the 2019 Bayreuth Festival, and the simple white-colored stage combine with the music to create an impressive depiction of this bizarre and cruel story.
