Following *The Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom* (ODE-1336), this is another collection of Tchaikovsky’s sacred works performed by the Latvian Radio Choir and Klava. This second release features a program centered on the rarely heard *All-Night Vigil*. Composed during the 1870s and 1880s as part of a series of sacred works Tchaikovsky wrote while studying the traditional music of the Russian Orthodox Church, the “All-Night Vigil” features carefully crafted harmonies set to short hymn melodies. However, perhaps because the result was so beautiful, it was deemed “unsuitable for performance in a church,” and the premiere did not take place in a church but rather in the concert hall of the All-Russian Industrial and Art Exhibition, performed by the Chudovsky Choir under the direction of Sakharov. Its delicate melodies, distinct from Rachmaninoff’s work of the same name, are truly captivating. This album also includes four other sacred works composed during the same period.
