Born in the Austrian Empire to Hungarian parents, the Doppler brothers both became theater flutists at a young age, and the elder brother, Franz, eventually went on to perform at the Vienna Court Theater. Both brothers were also composers and conducted orchestras; at the same time, they enjoyed immense popularity throughout Europe as a flute duo renowned for their virtuosic technique. This complete collection is the result of a project launched by the Spanish flutist Arimani to preserve the music of the Doppler brothers, whom he had studied passionately for many years; it is a major undertaking that brought together many renowned performers, including Arimani himself and his teacher, Rampal. The Doppler brothers’ works, with their somewhat melancholic tone reminiscent of their native Hungary, have become an essential part of the repertoire for many flutists in Japan as well.
