Description:
[Twelve Years After Recording the Complete Symphonies: Imazel’s Long-Awaited, Systematic Recording of Beethoven’s Keyboard Works—A 3-CD Set] In 2008, Anima Eterna, the early music ensemble led by Imazel, released a box set containing their complete recordings of Beethoven’s symphonies—a project that can only be described as exhilarating. Twelve years have passed since then. Immazer has now assumed the role of honorary music director of the ensemble; while entrusting the baton to young talents, he has begun to take his own career as a fortepiano performer into new territory. To mark the 250th anniversary of the composer’s birth, he has released a new three-disc album of Beethoven’s piano sonatas, a project he has long anticipated. This release, which uses period instruments (fortepianos) to uncover the composer’s true intentions, holds the promise of setting a new standard. Immazer, who has deepened his understanding of early music as a harpsichordist while engaging with the playing techniques of historically informed pianos for nearly half a century, has now turned his attention to Beethoven’s solo works—works that, like Immazer himself, were performed by an outstanding pianist during his lifetime and it is, so to speak, both inevitable and a most wondrous twist of fate that the day has finally come for him to turn his attention to Beethoven’s solo works—a composer who, like Immazer, was an outstanding performer during his lifetime and made a significant contribution to the development of this instrument. Through a masterpiece meticulously recreated by Christopher Clarke—one of today’s finest fortepiano builders—based on a model by Walter, a keyboard maker who enjoyed immense popularity in Vienna from the late 18th century onward, this recording explores the world of the most accomplished sonatas from around 1800. Beginning with masterpieces known by names such as “Pathétique,” “Moonlight,” and “Pastoral,” the program reaches a realm that can only be attained by a performer who fully understands the instrument’s characteristics… With a program that thoroughly explores the composer’s musical world by interweaving short pieces such as the Rondo a Capriccio “Anger at Lost Change,” this recording stirs high expectations for future recordings.
