Description:
The Norwegian composer Johansen entered the Oslo Conservatory in 1904 and studied in Berlin in 1915. His early compositions were in the Griegian style, inherited from the Romantic school, but his later works took on a neoclassical aspect, perhaps because he was strongly influenced by the music of Stravinsky when he traveled to Paris in 1920. Although only 36 of his works are numbered, there are countless other "unnumbered" works that span a variety of genres, from orchestral works to chamber music and songs. The "Piano Concerto," the centerpiece of the album, was conceived in the 1920s but was not completed until 1955. It is a gorgeous, technical work with classical form and tonality, typical of Johansen's career as an accomplished pianist. Other works include "Symphonic Variations and Fugue," with its German solidity, and "Pan," with its exquisite orchestration. The "Epigrams on Norwegian Motifs," which makes the most of Norwegian folk melodies, is included. Naxos Japan
