[Vittorio Giormi, Nicknamed “Gamba’s Heifetz,” Presents a Long-Awaited Program of “Stillness” and “Movement” by Mara] Vittorio Giermi, the younger brother of early music keyboardist Lorenzo Giermi, commands the viola da gamba (viol) with an overwhelming presence. Unfazed by his virtuosic technique, this master has produced acclaimed recordings on various labels and has demonstrated an exceptionally unique aptitude for French music, which was once a major center of viola da gamba artistry. Centered on his duo with the talented lutenist Luca Pianca—an early member of Il Giardino Armonico—and with the support of the brilliant young musicians of his own ensemble, Il Suonare Parlante, he has now turned his attention—at just the right moment—to Marin Marais, who was praised for playing “like an angel”! Marin Marais was one of the greatest viol (viola da gamba) players of the French Baroque era and, as a key figure in the court orchestra, also served as conductor at the Opéra Royal after Lully’s death. While his 500 viola da gamba works published during his lifetime masterfully capture the subtleties and diversity of court music, it is perhaps surprisingly little known that his operatic works also contain numerous noteworthy pieces, such as French dance suites that make full use of the ensemble’s potential. For this recording, Vittorio Giermi has included newly discovered manuscript scores that were not published during his lifetime. Opting for an ensemble configuration that deliberately omits the clavichord, he masterfully plays the viol with an overwhelming presence, interspersing the performance with ensemble pieces from time to time to vividly portray the dual facets of Marais’s artistic career. Luca Pianca’s plucked strings—which at times harmonize with the bowed instruments and at other times engage in a dialogue on equal footing—are exquisite. Naxos Japan
