Goran Filipec’s recording of Liszt’s “Paganini Études” has been a bestseller ever since its release as an import (8.573458). Although they are labeled as “études,” this is a brilliant collection of pieces—including “La Campanella”—that fully showcase Liszt’s virtuosic mastery. In fact, the version of this collection most commonly heard today is the 1851 revised edition known as the “Grand Etudes after Paganini.” The original “Etudes d’Exécution Transcendante after Paganini,” composed in 1840, was a work in which the young Liszt expanded the possibilities of the piano using Paganini’s compositions as a foundation, a piece so difficult that Schumann described it as “incredibly difficult.” Even today, fewer than ten pianists have recorded the entire 1840 edition. Goran Filipec, a Croatian pianist who performed this collection with ease, is also a Liszt scholar and a pianist who truly loves this work. In the accompanying Japanese liner notes, Filipec himself elucidates the differences between the two études, citing musical examples. “Carnival in Venice,” placed at the end of the album, is a short piece in variation form that uses a melody beloved by Paganini.
