Description:
Two representative works of verismo opera, a "new trend" in Italian opera from the 1890s to the beginning of the 20th century. Mascagni's "Cavalleria Rusticana" and Leoncavallo's "The Clown". Both were entered in a one-act opera competition sponsored by the music publisher Sonzogno, with "Cavalleria Rusticana" premiering as the winner and "The Clown" being a two-act work that was outside the rules, but the excellence of the work caught the attention of the company president, and it was eventually premiered under Toscanini's baton. Both premiered to great acclaim, and their popularity continues to this day. Conducting the Graz Philharmonic here is the female conductor Oksana Liniv, who will serve as the orchestra's principal conductor until 2020. Born into a musical family in Ukraine, she began conducting at the age of 16 and won third prize at the first Gustav Mahler Conducting Competition held by the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra in April 2004, and in 2013-2014 she demonstrated her talent as assistant to Kirill Petrenko at the Bavarian State Opera, He is a gifted talent who has performed on the world stage, including at the Graz Opera House.Here, he brings together a diverse group of singers, led by Australian tenor Aldo Di Toro, and spins a profound sound from the orchestra.
