Based on a German folk tale, the work depicts the superstitious lives of people in feudal times and their struggle for power, and was extremely popular among the German people at the time. The performance by Tomáš Netopil, an up-and-coming conductor from the Czech Republic, has an appealing, profound sound that reminds us of the original setting of the story, "in the deep woods of Bohemia.
