Description:
Recorded live in March 2019: Mariss Jansons and the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra in concert with the outstanding Iveta Apkalna as soloist. The programme pairs Saint-Saëns's Symphony No. 3 "Organ" with Poulenc's Organ Concerto, two works built around the organ and both splendid and grand in sonority. Jansons had already recorded the "Organ" Symphony with the Oslo Philharmonic in 1994 (with Wayne Marshall as organ soloist), but here he is joined by the dynamic Iveta Apkalna and adopts an even more spacious tempo than before, producing a sound at once monumental and entirely natural. From the animated first movement through the deep stillness of the second, the turbulent third and the majestic finale, the closing pages unfold in a long-breathed span that seems reluctant to let the music go, and the effect on the listener is deeply moving. Born in Latvia in 1976, Iveta Apkalna commands a broad repertoire from the classics to contemporary works and has been organist of the Elbphilharmonie since 2016. She first worked with Jansons in 2013 in Janáček's Glagolitic Mass. Apkalna's brilliance is heard at its fullest in Poulenc's Organ Concerto. Poulenc restricts the accompaniment to strings and timpani, allowing the organ's colours to stand out in full relief. The work is played without a break, opening with a Bach-like theme and closing solemnly with a recollection of that same theme. Jansons lets the strings sing generously while supporting the organ with unfailing precision. The timpani play a crucial role in both works, and here they are in the hands of Raymond Curfs, principal timpanist of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra - a player of international standing who was chosen by Abbado as timpanist when he founded the Lucerne Festival Orchestra. His refined musicianship and flawless technique produce a beautiful sound, and his decisive strokes at the key moments are without equal. Naxos Japan
