[Baroque cello virtuoso Coxe unravels a collection of 16th-century low-string works with the viola da gamba in hand!] Bruno Cocce, a Baroque cellist who has meticulously researched low-string music from the early Baroque through the early Classical periods—tailoring his approach to each specific work—has pursued the true nature of low-string instruments in each historical era, refusing to be confined by the conventions of the “cello.” Every release on the Alpha label is sure to contain some new discovery, a result of his collaboration with experts such as musicologist Marc Vanthuyck, who specializes in low-string research, and period instrument maker Charles Richet. Moreover, he has recently continued his collaboration with Guido Balestracci, a master of the viola da gamba, and is actively performing works from around the 17th century—a period when the histories of the cello and the gamba were inseparable. This album is a noteworthy new recording made possible precisely by Coche’s ongoing efforts. Having explored the true nature of the 17th-century world of low-string instruments—from Frescobaldi’s collection of canzonas to the extraordinary gamba player Tobias Hume—Coxe now goes even further back in time to shining a light on the 16th century—a time when various low-string instruments coexisted, long before the cello was invented. The focus here is on Diego Ortiz, the Spanish-born Roman master known as a composer for the gamba. With the collaboration of the prodigious Barestratchi (who has just released a unique new album featuring the arpeggione!), Coxe himself plays a variety of viola da gamba-family instruments crafted by Charles Richet, thoroughly exploring the world of 16th-century low-string music. Her approach to album production—blending contemporary music with instruments such as the organ, harpsichord, and vihuela (a Renaissance plucked string instrument)—is also highly appealing.
