In a duo with Brunello, he presents a stunning album featuring double concertos by Bach and Vivaldi. Here, Brunello plays a 4-string cello piccolo—the same instrument he used to perform the complete “Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin” without transposition (A469/NYCX-10100). This instrument adds a high E string to the four strings typically found on a standard cello (it is said that Bach’s “Suite No. 6 for Unaccompanied Cello” was intended for this five-string cello piccolo), and omits the lowest C string, leaving four strings in total. As the album title *SonarinOttava* (meaning “sounding in an octave”) suggests, it is tuned exactly one octave below a violin. The pieces that can be performed with a violin and a cello piccolo as solo instruments are primarily concertos for two violins and strings, starting with Bach’s masterpiece BWV 1043. The two parts, which are usually difficult to distinguish because they overlap in the same register, are brought out remarkably well when one is an octave lower. This distinction is even more pronounced in BWV 1060, which was originally scored for two harpsichords (though it is also well known in the version for violin and oboe). The result is a lively back-and-forth between the two players and the fascinating interplay of melodies that is truly eye-opening. The ensemble featuring Doeni and the Accademia della Nunziata also delivers a highly dynamic performance that greatly enhances this showcase of master musicians.
