Description:
[Gardiner’s Fated Masterpiece, Performed on Period Instruments at the Palace of Versailles, a Place Close to the Composer’s Heart!] Gardiner, a period-instrument conductor who has long devoted his energy to restoring Berlioz’s reputation, returns to the Palace of Versailles. With a musicality that grows ever deeper and more radiant with age—a quality he has consistently demonstrated in his successful collaborations with the London Symphony Orchestra— accompanied by his own period instrument ensemble, the Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique—which holds an overwhelming advantage in period interpretations of 19th-century works—to record a live performance of this “fated opera” with the “sound of the era” as envisioned by the composer. Given that complete recordings of this work are rare even when performed on modern instruments, it is exceptionally valuable to have this production captured on video with a rich performance on period instruments based on models from the composer’s lifetime. A few years after the success of *Symphonie fantastique*, Berlioz—driven by the world of opera that had inspired his music—composed *Benvenuto Cellini*, premiered in 1838, an ambitious work that shed light on the legendary Italian sculptor. However, it faced numerous difficulties, and the premiere was a dismal failure. Although there were subsequent performances, such as the Weimar production by Liszt and a performance in London, the work did not achieve success during the composer’s lifetime. If the reason for its failure lay in the many technical challenges involved in its performance, this recording—in which the ambitious efforts of talented musicians, led by Gardiner, have borne fruit—is so rich and fulfilling that it could contribute significantly to the work’s rehabilitation. The production is masterful: by deliberately adopting a concert format to avoid staging difficulties, the ensemble of period instruments is placed directly on stage, and the performance unfolds on the stage of the former Royal Opera House, which has been restored to its original interior as it was when Berlioz was invited to perform there. The singers’ compelling performances are breathtaking—this is an excellent project made possible precisely because it is a video production. *There is some slight noise in the 2 hours, 42 minutes, 44 seconds audio track; however, the label has determined that it does not interfere with enjoyment and has released the recording accordingly.
