[Simone Young’s Production of Janáček’s Masterpiece Opera] Janáček’s final opera, *From the House of the Dead*, directed by Castorf, premiered at the Bavarian State Opera in May 2018. The unique visual world—featuring skeleton costumes, screens, and, for some reason, a Coca-Cola advertisement standing on the revolving stage—sparked mixed reactions at the time of the performance, but it can be described as an outstanding interpretation that intuitively visualized the work’s somewhat enigmatic and unsettling atmosphere. Simone Young’s conducting is dynamic yet supple, unfolding on a grand scale the music that Janáček composed—dark and violent, yet imbued with beauty. This release features newly created Japanese subtitles, based on a careful review of the original Czech libretto. The setting is a Siberian prison. Alexander, a newly admitted political prisoner, catches the warden’s eye due to his appearance and his strong sense of pride, and is subjected to terrible treatment almost immediately upon arrival. This is the story of the prisoners as seen through his eyes: Filka, known as “Luka”; Skratov, who murdered his unfaithful lover; and Aliya, a Tatar boy. Eventually, the day comes for Alexander to be released, but the threads of their fates become mysteriously intertwined. Naxos Japan
