[Live Footage of Maestro András Schiff’s “Well-Tempered Clavier,” Book 2, Is Now Available!] Following the 2017 release of “Book 1,” live footage of Schiff’s 2018 Proms performance of the complete “Well-Tempered Clavier, Book 2” by Bach is now available. Schiff, who systematically recorded Bach’s keyboard works primarily in the 1980s, has earned high acclaim not only for his recordings on the modern piano but also for his Schubert recordings using the fortepiano. Because he has such a multifaceted grasp of both Bach as a composer and the piano as an instrument, he delivers an exceptionally beautiful performance—one that richly resonates from his Steinway while largely avoiding the use of the pedal. Published some 20 years after the first volume—which had a strong character of etudes—the second volume consists of works that are musically and compositionally sophisticated and avant-garde; Schiff’s deep understanding of the works is even more vividly expressed in this performance than in the previously released first volume. Although the Proms is a festive occasion, the atmosphere in the hall—filled with high expectations and deep emotion, perhaps due in part to the excellence of the previous year’s performance—is also very appealing.
