[Weber’s Little-Known Opera Revived in the 21st Century!] In 12th-century Germany, Count Adral of Nevers has been separated from his beloved wife, Oilianthe, due to war, and the two are living in despair. Then, caught in the schemes of Count Rijart of Forest—who plots to make Oiliant his own—and Eglantine, Oiliant’s lady-in-waiting who harbors feelings for Adral, Adral comes to believe that his wife has betrayed him… Although *Euliante*, which premiered in Vienna in 1823, was a ambitious work by Weber, its running time of over three hours and shortcomings in the libretto proved to be obstacles, preventing it from becoming a regularly performed piece. However, the musical composition—including the overture—is of such high quality that its popularity has never waned, as evidenced by the various revised versions that have been staged over the years. In this recording, under the robust baton of Konstantin Trinks conducting the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra, the highlights include Jacqueline Wagner’s crystalline singing as Oryante and Kronthaler’s intense, dramatic performance as her rival, Eglantine. The male cast surrounding them is equally flawless, and in particular, Foster-Williams’s all-out performance as Risiardo injects excitement into the story. Christoph Loy’s direction, combined with Johannes Reicker’s simple yet effective set design and a few minor cuts to the original libretto, streamlines the narrative and establishes it as a compelling drama.
