The World's First Video Recording! Florence, May 2, 1589. On this day, a grand celebration was held for the wedding of Ferdinand I, head of the Medici family, and Christina. To celebrate this joyous occasion for the head of the family—a great patron of the arts in the 16th century—the most prominent poets and musicians of the time gathered to perform a special play for the occasion: the comedy *La Pellegrina*. Although opera had not yet emerged in the 16th century, the format of *La Pellegrina*—in which the narrative is linked by six interludes—marked the early stages of opera’s development. In fact, one of the composers, Jacopo Peri, is remembered in history as the man who wrote “the world’s first opera.” The “interludes” (intermezzi) performed between acts consist of three to six short pieces each, including instrumental and vocal works in various instrumental and vocal configurations. A defining feature of this production is that various composers, led by Marvetti, contributed pieces that come together to form a captivating suite. In this production, director Valentino Villa skillfully adapts themes based on ancient mythology to the modern era, crafting an impressive and lavish stage production, while the energetic performance by the period instrument orchestra “Mode Antico,” conducted by Sardelli, adds a touch of splendor to the work.
