Description:

[Experience the cutting edge of contemporary dance from the Royal Ballet—a trilogy of uniquely distinct works on video!] Choreographer Christopher Wheeldon, known for his pop-inspired style, has boldly reimagined his 2008 work *Within the Golden Hour* for The Royal Ballet. Beatrice Styx-Brunell, Francesca Hayward, Sarah Lamb, and Vadim Muntagirov—all star dancers of the Royal Ballet—dance brilliantly to music by Vivaldi and others. “Medusa,” created by Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui—who continues to present stimulating works centered on the themes of intercultural encounters and dialogue—was his first commission for the Royal Ballet. Drawing deeply on the story of Medusa from Greek mythology, the Royal Ballet’s prima ballerina, Natalia Osipova, passionately portrays a woman at the mercy of an absurd fate. Ryoichi Hirano’s portrayal of Poseidon—a symbol of patriarchal oppression—is overwhelmingly commanding. The music features a unique composition in which Purcell’s compositions evoke the archaic world of mythology, contrasted with the dreamlike effects of electronic music. “Flight Patterns” by choreographer Crystal Pite, who has garnered worldwide attention for her themes that earnestly confront various issues in contemporary society. This work addresses the refugee crisis; set to Górecki’s “Symphony of Sorrows,” a group dance performed by 36 young dancers from the Royal Ballet of England depicts the social contradictions of our time and the tragedies they entail.
