However, when heard on the arpeggione—as the composer himself intended—accompanied by the sound of a period piano, one is truly surprised by the many discoveries to be made. Ideally, one would like to hear it performed by a skilled virtuoso, and a new recording has now been released that more than satisfies that desire. This new Schubert album, released by the Belgian label Ricercar—which has a proven track record in period instrument recordings—features the talented viola da gamba player Guido Balestracci, who masterfully plays the now-lost arpeggione, alongside alongside virtuosos on the guitar and fortepiano—instruments in use during the early 19th century. Rather than confining the gentle and somewhat poignant sound of the arpeggione to that famous sonata alone, the ensemble also showcases it in sonatinas and art songs written for the violin, vividly highlighting its compatibility with Schubert’s style. There are many tracks featuring the early 19th-century guitar—a instrument Schubert himself loved—and it is worth noting that the lute, which must have still existed at the time, is also used appropriately when called for.
