The theme of this release is “The Abandoned Ariadne (Arianna in Italian).” Through works by three masters, the album carefully unravels the emotions of a woman who has been abandoned by her lover at an unexpected moment. Ariadne is the daughter of King Minos in ancient mythology. She fell in love with Theseus, the hero who, guided by her, defeated the Minotaur lurking in the kingdom’s labyrinth. Though they left the kingdom together, he unexpectedly abandoned her on the island of Naxos. There have been no shortage of masterful musical works that skillfully depict the anger and despair toward a cowardly hero. On this album, you can enjoy the striking stylistic contrasts between the late Baroque composers A. Scarlatti (Italy) and Handel (Germany & England), and Haydn (Austria) from the Classical period—all presented with Arcangelo’s superbly refined performances on period instruments. It’s also worth noting that Haydn’s works—originally composed to be accompanied by a single piano—are presented here in grand orchestral versions. Kate Lindsey truly shines in this collaboration with Arcangelo, as their partnership brings out the music’s full charm.
