[A Collection of Chamber Concertos for Small Ensembles Popular in the Late Baroque Period] Concerto grosso was popular throughout Europe during the late Baroque period. This collection brings together chamber concertos—which followed the concerto grosso form but gained popularity because they could be performed more casually by smaller ensembles—as well as works arranged for such smaller ensembles. The collection features works for two recorders, or a recorder and an oboe, in three-part arrangements with a basso continuo, as well as four-part works with a separate cello part. In addition to works by Vivaldi—who composed extensively in this genre—the album also includes an arrangement of Corelli’s famous “Christmas Concerto,” a delightful addition. A key feature of this album is the opportunity to compare works composed in various regions. Formed following the Axion Classical Competition held in Belgium in 2006, Ensemble Bradamante consists of artists who transcend genre boundaries, with a repertoire that extends beyond early music and the classical period to include Romantic and contemporary music, as well as folk music from across Europe. In particular, the prominent role of the five-string cello—played by Palazzo, who has devoted many years to mastering it—is a defining feature of this ensemble. Naxos Japan
