[Two Orphée stories from Lully’s greatest rival, straight from the forefront of the French-speaking early music scene] A Nocte Temporis, the ensemble led by early music singer Reinout van Mehelen, continues to actively promote 17th- and 18th-century French music to the world through recordings on the Alpha label. Meanwhile, the early music vocal ensemble Vox Luminis—centered around accomplished early music singers from France, Belgium, and Germany—has presented a wide-ranging repertoire, from the “Three Great S’s” of Germany (Schütz, Schein, and Scheidt) to Handel, in a small-scale ensemble format with just two or three singers per part. These two brilliant ensembles, at the forefront of early music research and live performance in Europe, have joined forces to record a rich album that takes on head-on two masterpieces by Charpentier, one of the greatest composers of the French Baroque. While Lully flourished as Director of Music at the court of Louis XIV, Charpentier was sidelined from royal commissions and, hindered by Lully, was unable to compose large-scale operas; however, he left behind numerous masterpieces in the form of vocal works for small ensembles and on a modest scale. He composed two works—one long and one short—based on the story of Orpheus, the master lyre player who journeys to the underworld to reclaim his deceased lover, Eurydice. Here, A Nochte Temporis highlights the contrast between these two works, enriching Van Mehelen’s singing with a brilliant performance on period instruments. Temporis ensemble is magnificent, highlighting the contrast between the two works while bringing out the brilliance of Van Mehelen’s songs through a vivid performance on period instruments. It’s also worth noting the participation of the exceptional Anthony Romanuk, who also featured prominently as a harpsichordist on Patrizia Kopacinska’s acclaimed album *TAKETWO*. The participation of the highly skilled vocal ensemble Vox Luminis is also reassuring, and they convincingly convey that Charpentier’s highly theatrical music represents a sonic world that we must engage with here and now in the 21st century.
