Description:
[Beautiful Recorder Sonatas—including some by unknown composers—that capture the depth of Venice, the City of Music!] An album featuring Davena (born in Rio de Janeiro in 1983) on the recorder and Hibeiro (born in São Paulo in 1976) on the harpsichord. Over the course of 40 days, the two explored several archives in Venice and discovered a total of six previously unknown works—including recorder sonatas and pieces for harpsichord—which they have recorded here for the first time. The album features numerous intriguing works, including pieces attributed to Vivaldi; a toccata believed to have been written by Gasparini—who also served as music director at the Pietà—for one of his students, Isabella; and a sonata composed in a similar style but which, due to differences in technique, cannot be definitively attributed to Gasparini. All are brilliant works that fully convey the musical prosperity of Venice at the time; the fact that such masterpieces have remained hidden underscores the depth of this city with its long musical history. The album also includes selections from the sole collection of works by Bigaglia, a Benedictine priest in Venice. As members of the New Collegium, the two have already released an album on the Ramee label featuring Telemann’s diverse chamber music (RAM1904), which has been well received as a fresh approach to the works of this renowned composer. Davena, in particular, has produced two albums on the Passacaille label featuring 18th-century Neapolitan composers and has garnered attention for his exceptional aptitude for late Italian Baroque works. As with the previous albums in the series, the recorders used are instruments crafted by Fumiyo Saito, a recorder player and maker with workshops in Amsterdam and Tokyo. Recorded at the concert hall located in the historic Ospedaletto orphanage in Venice. Naxos Japan
