In October 2019, just as his visit to Japan was imminent, the sudden news of Skoda’s passing broke. Although he was over 90 years old and there had been concerns about his health, he himself was reportedly eager to come to Japan, and preparations for his concerts here were proceeding steadily. Unfortunately, the Japan tour was canceled, but we are left with this video recording of Beethoven’s three late piano sonatas, recorded on October 15, 2017. Held at the Musikverein in Vienna, this concert was organized to celebrate Paul Badura-Skoda’s 90th birthday. Beethoven’s final three piano sonatas—which he loved dearly—and the preceding “Six Bagatelles” are supported by a magnificent interpretation that carries on the Viennese tradition, distinct from that of later generations of pianists, and a warm tone. The audience, which filled the hall to capacity, was enthralled by the richly nuanced performance and celebrated Skoda after the concert with thunderous applause and bouquets of flowers. Paul Badura-Skoda was born in Vienna in 1927. He studied at the Vienna Conservatory and won first prize at the Austrian Music Competition in 1947. He subsequently studied under Etvin Fischer and began his career as a pianist. He was a friend of the composer Frank Martin and is also known for his collaborations with Furtwängler, Karajan, and David Oistrakh. He was also a highly respected musicologist and made significant contributions as the editor of Schubert’s sonatas and Mozart’s piano concertos.
