Description:

Introducing the acclaimed soprano Sabine Devier. Thomas’s beautiful opera is brought back to life! 19th-century Paris. Numerous operas were born from Shakespeare’s plays, which were all the rage at the time. Among them, “Hamlet” was particularly popular, and while several composers used it as a subject, the work that achieved the greatest success was that of Ambroise Thomas, whose lyrical melodies brought each scene to life. The libretto, written by Michel Carré and Jules Barbier—who had long collaborated with Thomas—rewrites the tragic conclusion of Shakespeare’s original play: after Hamlet defeats Claudius, he declares himself King of Denmark. Although it was a huge success at its premiere, it became a “forgotten work” as performance opportunities gradually dwindled; however, thanks to a recent revival of interest, it is now being staged more frequently. In Thomas’s initial conception, the role of Amlet was intended for a tenor, but since no suitable singer was available, a baritone was cast in the lead role. Degu’s performance in this production is so magnificent that it surpasses even the great singers who have previously taken on this role—Cheryl Milnes, Thomas Hampson, Thomas Allen, and Simon Keenlyside. Sabine Duvier, who sings the role of Ophelia, is a soprano who has garnered attention in early music productions and is currently making a big splash in Europe. Known for her delicate appearance and solid technique, she delivers a magnificent “Mad Scene” in this production. Louis Langley draws a crystalline sound from the orchestra, while Cyril Test’s direction transposes the action to the present day and, using simple staging, masterfully reveals the depths of the characters’ psyches.
