[The Musical Evolution of Opera, Pioneered by Wailer After He Moved to the United States!] A masterpiece opera composed and completed by Weill in his later years, based on Langston Hughes’s libretto adapted from Elmer Rice’s play *Street Scene*, which premiered in 1928, won the Pulitzer Prize the following year, and was later adapted into a film. Influenced by the vitality of the American music scene, he fused the traditional European opera form with American music genres he had researched himself—musicals, gospel, blues, and pop—and, with great pride, named it “American Opera.” It premiered in 1947 at the Adelphi Theatre on Broadway. This production is a further development of the version that director James Full presented in London in 2008 to great acclaim and which was also staged in Paris in 2013; it is a co-production of the Royal Opera of Madrid, the Cologne Opera, and the Monte Carlo Opera. The story takes place over two days during an unbearably sweltering summer in the early 20th century in a poor immigrant neighborhood on New York’s Lower East Side. The cast includes Frank, a patriarchal and violent husband; his wife, Anna; their daughter Rose, who works at a company; and their young son, Willie—the Morant family—form the center of the story. The drama unfolds as people of various races and cultural backgrounds—including the cheerful Fiorentino family of Italian immigrants, the intellectual Jewish Kaplan family, and the gossip-loving Mrs. Jones—weave their stories together. Set against a backdrop of moral and social oppression and corruption in American society, the story unfolds dramatically, featuring the tragic romance between Rose and Sam, the young man from the Kaplan family; dreams of a career in show business; and a murder stemming from Anna’s affair.
