At the time of Handel's visit to Italy, oratorios and church music were flourishing. Here Handel was first exposed to the wonders of Italian singers, and as the title of this album "Handel Uncaged" suggests, he began composing cantatas in Italian as if he were experimenting with all kinds of vocal music. In this album, Lawrence Zazzo, an American countertenor, has selected "Cantatas for Alto". The album includes the world premiere recordings of two previously unpublished works, "The God of Love, Bird-stick" and "Listen to My Advice," HWV 172 (Roman version), which consists of ten arias. Zazzo made his debut as Oberon in Britten's "Dreams of a Summer World" while a student at the Royal College of Music, and has a neat, mellow voice that has appeared at major opera houses including the Royal Opera, the MET, the Vienna State Opera, and the Théâtre Monet. In this production, she gives a wonderful performance with Manson, a renowned cellist in the world of ancient music, and other players. Naxos Japan
