Founded in 1900 as the "Vienna Performing Society Orchestra," the Vienna Symphony Orchestra boasts a long history of more than 100 years. The orchestra's first recording of Beethoven's complete symphonies was undertaken by Philippe Jordan, who was appointed Chief Conductor in 2014; the complete works were recorded during the spring and summer of 2017, and these recordings were released one every six months. The complete works will be released before Beethoven's anniversary year (250th anniversary of his birth) in 2020. This time, the Symphony No. 9, the last of the Zicles, is here, as you have been waiting for! This release also comes with a commentary by Walter Weidlinger, "Transcending the Limits" (with Japanese translation). As in the past, he will provide a detailed explanation of the work as well as Jordan's thoughts on this great work. He considers Symphony No. 3 "Hero" as the precursor of the Ninth Symphony, saying, "The first movement is 'Geist,' the second movement is centered on rhythm, and the third movement is dominated by melody. The final movement synthesizes all of these in a huge variation style. You will also read an interesting discussion of Jordaan's work, in which he says, "There can be no more variations.Not only is the tempo set after much deliberation by Jordan and the natural interpretation of the music flowing, but also the power of the climax, which is built up by the choir and the solo singers, "four of the best I have ever had the pleasure of assembling," is overwhelming.
