This is the third installment, following Volume 1 (RIC364), a collection of short pieces, and *Pieces for One or Two Viols, Volume 1* (RIC379). Although it is a substantial 5-disc set, the nature of the suites ensures that the configuration of the basso continuo changes, keeping the listener engaged throughout. At times somber, at times lighthearted, this darling of the French Baroque masterfully wields the viola da gamba—said to be the instrument closest to the “human voice”—to bring the songs left behind by this composer to life today. The album concludes with an overwhelming “Folia” performed by a large ensemble. *Please note that there is an error on page 3 of the booklet, where it incorrectly refers to this as “Viola da Gamba Collection, Vol. 1.” We apologize for this.
